District Profile
Bankura, the fourth largest district of West Bengal is
located in the western part of the state, which is
popularly known as “Rarh” from time immemorial. It has
an area of 6882 square km and according to the census of
2001, it has a population of 31, 92,695. It is bounded
by Paschim Midnapur in the south, Purulia District in
the west, Bardhaman district in the north and Hoogly
District in the east. Bankura is drained by Damodar,
Dwarakeswar, Shilabati and Kangsabati along with their
tributaries of which Ghandheswari, Shilai and Kumari
deserve separate mention. The head quarter of the
District is at Bankura from which it has derived its
name. According to one tradition the town was named
after a local chieftain called Bankura Rai, while
according to another legend the town is so called after
Bir Bankura, a prince of Bishnupur. The District Bankura
acquired its present shape and dimension in 1879 though
till 1881, the District Judge ship was known as west
Burdwan. It was given the name Bankura in 1881 and since
then the administrative and judicial jurisdiction of the
District have been coterminous with the Geographical
boundaries of Bankura.
